How It Works

CineVid’s pipeline consists of these key steps:

  1. Preprocess color space: Convert frames to linear RGB (undo display gamma), so that color math is meaningful.
  2. Select representative frames: Sample evenly across the video (or detect scene changes) to capture lighting/content diversity.
  3. Sample pixels per frame: Choose thousands of pixels (avoid near-black/white) for stable color statistics.
  4. Reference sampling: Get samples from a reference image representing desired mood/look.
  5. Per-frame transform estimation: For each frame, compute an affine color mapping out = M · in + b that best maps frame samples to reference samples via least squares (optionally with weighting and robust methods).
  6. Aggregation: Average per-frame matrices and offsets (or use weighted/trimmed means) to get global transform.
  7. LUT generation: Rasterize the global transform into a 3D RGB cube (for example a 33×33×33 grid), apply transform, clamp values, and export in `.cube` format.
  8. Preview & strength control: Let user preview results and blend between identity and LUT, preserve skin/highlights if needed.

Minor formula in pseudo‐math:

Given frames F₁…F_N and reference R:
for each frame Fᵢ:
    sample pixels Sᵢ from Fᵢ
    sample Tᵢ from R
    find (Mᵢ, bᵢ) minimizing ‖Tᵢ − (Mᵢ·Sᵢ + bᵢ)‖²
Then compute:
    M_avg = average(Mᵢ)
    b_avg = average(bᵢ)
Generate LUT from (M_avg, b_avg)

Use Cases

  • Independent filmmakers needing consistent grading across scenes shot under different lighting.
  • Content creators or vloggers wanting a signature look for their video series.
  • Brand videos that need color consistency (logo, skin tones, lighting) across different cameras.
  • Batch processing of footage from multiple cameras or shoots to unify the visual style.
  • LUT marketplaces generating variations of base looks tuned to example footage.

Technical Details & Refinements

To get good results, several “knobs” matter:

  • Linear vs display space: All color math works better in linear RGB. Convert back to sRGB only when exporting or previewing.
  • Frame & pixel sampling: More frames = more stability, but compute cost rises. Avoid sampling extremes; weight skin or faces higher.
  • Robust estimation: Use regularization (ridge), or even RANSAC to ignore outlier mappings (like flares or specular highlights).
  • Clamping & gamut handling: Ensure after transform values stay in [0,1] or within gamut; consider working in wide-gamut spaces for large color shifts.
  • LUT size: 17³ to 65³ possible; 33³ is a popular sweet spot. Larger LUTs give more precision but file size + apply cost increase.

Limitations & Next Steps

CineVid’s model here is a strong first step, but there are known limitations:

  • Only global color transforms; no local or selective color edits (e.g. sky-only, foliage-only).
  • Reference-image mismatch can produce odd results if the style diverges a lot from the footage content.
  • Specular highlights and extreme exposures may skew transforms unless handled robustly.
  • No film grain or complex stylistic artifacts — mostly color, contrast, tint, and tone.

Possible improvements:

  • Train a neural network to predict 3D LUTs or residuals given frames + style embedding.
  • Add non-linear layers (curves, gamma, maybe learned tone-mapping).
  • Scene-aware LUTs: compute separate LUTs per scene or per lighting setting.
  • Better perceptual color metrics (use LAB / CIEDE2000) for evaluation & fitting.

Conclusion

CineVid turns a tedious color‐grading workflow into something closer to “set it and forget it,” without giving up control. By sampling your video, learning from a reference theme, averaging transforms, and exporting a usable LUT, it gives creators a way to lock in their visual identity early. If you shoot, edit, or produce video, this is a tool that bridges between craft and automation.
